Investigating the perceptions of Life Sciences learners when learning genetic engineering using EDUKITE in selected Northern Cape Schools

dc.description.abstract The aim of this study was to investigate how Life Sciences learners perceived the use of the Edukite learning application when they were studying genetic engineering. Twenty learners from two separate schools participated in this small-scale qualitative study that was carried out in Kimberley. The study's theoretical underpinning was the technology acceptance model (TAM). This exploratory study used a case study research design to investigate learners' perceptions, factors influencing their perceptions, and how learners' intentions to utilize Edukite are influenced by perceived challenges and/or usefulness of the tool. The information gathered from the questionnaires and interviews was analysed through the application of thematic analysis. Literature indicates that m-learning has become more prominent across South Africa and other sub-Saharan regions and this is credited to their appeal among young people and their low cost. Literature further indicated that the use of mobile devices supported by the different educational apps has revolutionised learning particularly in a science classroom. Learners are able to watch simulation of laboratory experiments and various scientific phenomenon at a low cost. The findings of the study indicated that learners have positive perceptions about Edukite and perceive it as a useful learning tool that helps them to improve their performance on the content of genetic engineering and is able to accommodate various learning styles. The study also found that the majority of learners still value the teacher as crucial component while learning genetic engineering and blended learning can be a best way to integrate Edukite within the teaching and learning spaces. Results further indicated that factors that influence learners’ perception regarding the use of Edukite include whether or not they have owned a mobile device with apps before, the benefits and challenges of Edukite and the app features of Edukite. Learners generally perceived Edukite to be easy to use and a very useful tool, hence their likelihood of using Edukite in other content areas was deemed to be very high. Based on the findings, app designers were recommended to improve on the app features such as connectivity and content. The NCDoE was also recommended to train teachers on the integration of m-learning in their lessons. Further research that utilises a mixed method approach and a larger sample size was also recommended. en_US
